Leila is Swiss & American and currently based in Amsterdam. She speaks fluent French and English and has good knowledge of Dutch and German. This past year, she was coordinator for the European Lesbian* Conference (“EL*C”), which took place in Vienna in October 2017. In this capacity, she was the only paid person within the board to have responsibility for content/program and logistical conceptualization, planning and management. Prior to joining the EL*C board, Leila was project officer with the UNHCR for the global refugee youth consultations (“GRYC”). She also acted as advocacy manager for the organization for refuge, asylum and migration ("ORAM"), which supports LGBTIQ refugees at global level. Leila started as a youth activist in 2006, when she founded the LGBTIQ student network “Think Out” in Geneva, Switzerland. As founder and leader of Think Out Leila also co-founded the Geneva Federation of LGBTIQ organizations and the youth-focused association, Totem. She holds an MA in Human Rights Studies from Columbia University and a BA in International Relations from Geneva University. She is a member of the pool of experts of the Council of Europe's SOGI Unit.
